On the other hand, internal non-winmodems are basically just an external modem with all the components crammed together on the card instead of the external box ie, they have hardware on them.
Every external modem is NOT a winmodem. If you think that you might want to try Linux or Be, or if you have a slower less than a P CPU, go with an external or internal non-winmodem. As Greg says you need the correct driver.
I don’t intend to use anything but Windows and I have an Athlon All modems I’ve owned have worked well with no problems, both win and other types until replaced. Part of our modem pool has almost modems and winmodems are not supported.
The easiest way luccen tell which DSP your modem uses is to look at the modem card itself. All the “experts” say they are crud. Nobody mentioned if the US Robotics Winmodem is reliable, well-made, etc.
The existing modem will be removed, and the modem will be re-installed with a new name LT Win Modem or Lucent Win Modem depending upon the driver version. Winmodem are cheap shit with no hardware and install on com port 5.
The firmware – programming for the modem’s DSP – is contained in the driver.
